Geo-Marine Technology
Team

John L. Rietman, P.G.
President and Founder

Following graduation from the University of Montana in early 1979, John Rietman worked as a field geologist under contract to the US Department of Energy.  In 1980, he hired on with CGG as a Party Chief for 3-D seismic crews in Wyoming and Oklahoma.  In 1982, John was promoted to Seismic Processing Geophysicist in Denver.  John joined Racal Geophysics (Racal Decca) in 1982, where he was responsible for marine seismic data acquisition and marine geohazard interpretations for the Gulf of Mexico.  He later joined Intersea Research Corporation, where he continued high-resolution geophysical investigations.  In 1986, John became a consulting geologist, and traveled on numerous marine projects worldwide.  After filling up several passports with visa stamps and surviving numerous mergers and acquisitions, he founded Geo-Marine Technology, Inc. in 1997, in San Diego, California.  John brought Geo-Marine Technology to Missoula, Montana in early 2006 to take advantage of the fly fishing, rafting, backpacking, outdoor life, and abundant pool of talented geologists, several of whom make Geo-Marine Technology the successful company it is today.

Beau Pallister
Vice President/Geologist/Geophysicist

Beau Pallister came to Geo-Marine Technology, Inc., after a blissful decade of studying geology, geophysics, and rugby at the University of Montana.  He was working as an oilfield geologist when he had the good fortune to meet John at a local sporting event.  What started out as a rousing geological debate, over a few pints of beer, eventually developed into a dynamic and profitable partnership.  Beau has thoroughly enjoyed the challenges met, and friendships forged, during his experiences as an offshore marine geologist.  Since joining Geo-Marine Technology, Beau has acquired thousands of hours of experience working as an offshore marine geologist in many seas around the world.  In addition to his offshore experience, Beau has authored dozens of survey and desktop study reports for the offshore oil and telecommunication industries.  When in the office, Beau is responsible for the planning and management of large-scale geophysical interpretation and reporting projects.  Beau’s continued geologic interests include pockmark process morphology and Proterozoic sedimentology.  Beau and Matt Zunker (of Geo-Marine Technology) have several independent research projects in the works that will hopefully culminate in (not too distant) publications.  When Beau isn’t working, he enjoys fishing, hunting and horseback riding in the lesser-known wilds of Montana.  He is an active member of his local men’s rugby team, and is consequently (and frequently) seen with black eyes and abrasions.

Matt Zunker
Senior Geologist/Geophysicist

Having a wide range of interests, Matt came to Geo-Marine Technology, Inc. with a broad knowledge base, which is particularly developed in the fields of sedimentology, scientific philosophy, graphical design and technical writing.  His love of the natural world led him to study geology at the University of Montana, where his imaginative and meticulous bends were educated and inspired by a few really great professors and friends.  Matt’s graduate work was, and continues to be, a source of both inspiration and stress as he pursues a more complete understanding of flow forms and their industrial applications.  Additionally, Matt and Beau Pallister (Vice President) are currently developing research projects to address several of their working ideas on the subject of Proterozoic sedimentary processes.  Walking the fence between theory and practice, Matt has worked as a geotechnical engineer and field geologist in Colorado, an adjunct geosciences instructor at The University of Montana, and a middle school math teacher at a local Missoula private school.  After transitioning to Geo-Marine Technology, Matt quickly found his niche as a lead technical writer and data synthesizer, and has since been at the vanguard of all of Geo-Marine Technology’s Desktop Studies and a principal contributor to its many survey reports.  Nowadays, when he’s not at work, Matt is most often in the company of his wonderful family reading kids stories, drawing super heroes or wiping crayon streaks off the television, but he manages to break free now and then to weed the garden, type out a few words for his book, sketch out architectural drawings or visit the high country.

Brian Foster
Technician

Brian came to Geo-Marine Technology, Inc. following his studies in freshwater ecology, organismal biology and historical ethics at the University of Montana.  Brian was excited to join the unique team at Geo-Marine Technology, both to bring his expertise in aquatic ecology to the table and to refresh his interests in drafting and design.  When he is not working at Geo-Marine Technology, he is likely starting IVs or snapping EKGs in the local Emergency Department.  Brian enjoys getting out and about in Missoula and the surrounding wilderness, whether he's sipping IPAs at Draught Works, descending snowy peaks, or casting dry flies in the Bitterroot valley.
